Mac Video Editing: 4 Hacks Worth Knowing

It may sound surprising, but Apple is actually only the third most popular desktop operating system.

But, that doesn’t mean there aren’t tons of great tips and tricks to taking your video editing on Mac computers to the next level.

Read on to find out what you need to know to optimize your Mac video editing.

1. Pick The Right Editing Software

There are multiple different types of editing software you can use on a Mac computer, so you should be sure to consider all your options. Of course, you can stick with iMovie, which comes with your computer.

For something a little more professional, you can invest in the Adobe Creative Cloud and start using Premiere. Or, you can try out Final Cut, Avid, or another professional editing system. There are also other free options out there if iMovie doesn’t quite cut it for you.

2. Learn All The iMovie Tips

If you choose to use iMovie for your video editing needs, you’ll want to learn all the ins and outs of the software. Familiarize yourself with the different keyboard shortcuts offered in iMovie. If you make a mistake, you can press command and Z together in order to undo it.

Always know how to set the frame rate and export settings in iMovie. You don’t want to finish an export only to find it’s become a tiny box rather than a full-screen video.

3. Use Other Equipment

You also shouldn’t be afraid to incorporate other programs and devices to take your video editing to the next level. For example, there are lots of programs on your phone you can use to make your videos look their best.

You can use Adobe Creative Cloud Express. Check out your options when it comes to video editing apps for Mac.

There’s also equipment you can use to reduce the toll video editing can take on your computer. Whenever possible, use an external hard drive to store your footage, so that you won’t end up using all the memory on your computer. Add extra monitors so you can look at multiple workflows at once.

4. Choose The Right Computer

Mac computers aren’t a monolith. They have very different specifications depending on their age and model. So, you’ll want to be sure that you’ve chosen the best possible Mac computer available to you. Ideally, you’ll want a recent model iMac, which can handle the RAM and memory consumption required by video editing.

There are some Mac laptops that can handle video editing, but it may not be as smooth as using a desktop computer. You’ll want to think about updating the RAM and hard drive space when you’re buying a new computer.
